Attack of the OVA #8 – “Park” It Over There blog 142

Now, I really liked “Amagi Brilliant Park”, a series about characters from another world who need to generate positive energy to live here in our dimension (go check the review). What I enjoyed about the three-run OVA is the scratch style that they used, as evidenced by that piece of junk up there. As if it was slapped together in record time, the shows are depending more on the stories they tell and the predicaments everyone gets into than the actual art approach, but it works quite well for them. I feel if they used the original artwork, it would actually hurt these throw-away bits.

One concern about OVAs is where to see them in the run. I would wait until Episode Four to slot them in, as you have a good idea as to who everyone is and their personalities. They also do what I would want in an OVA. One episode is the #0.5 one, where the three main characters discuss the changes that are coming down in the park with a new ‘leader’, another is an alternative take on particular events, but seen from a really different perspective. They only last about three or so minutes each, but that’s enough time to get across the mayhem they want to promote. Episode Three is especially maniacal, as a simple button click on your PC can lead to absolute anarchy. It is a lot of frenetic energy and the plots don’t come across as more than a couple of gags, but, as with OVAs, there was no real place to insert them into the series, so I would let it ride as it is and have a good chuckle.

On a scale of 1 to 10:

Artwork 2 (Really wretched, but intentional)
Plot 8 (Time to be weird)
Pacing 9 (Almost slapstick)
Effectiveness 8 (Good use of personalities)
Conclusion 7 (It reaches a ‘coupler’, but hasn’t ended)
Fan Service 0 (A similar show would be “Honey and Clover”)

Overall 9 (Just a really good time)

And remember, it’s first run until you’ve seen it. What are you looking at?
