The “Devil” You Say blog 140

There are times that you like a caliber of blind-side anime and this one, “The Testament of Sister New Devil”, ( “Shinmai Maō no Tesutamento”) certainly delivers in that category, as it starts off like any other blended family anime.

Basara Tojo (that lost male youth up there) is a first year high school student. He and his father, Jin, live in Tokyo, just the two of them (as mom died a few years earlier). Out of nowhere, Jin announces that he got married, is going on some business and son is to take care of his new step-sisters, Mio (redhead) and Maria (silverhead) Naruse. A bit after they arrive, we discover that they are more than they appear (although a lot was given up during the opening credits). Mio is a Demon princess and heir of the former Demon Lord, Wilbert. (Wilbert? What kind of demon is named ‘Wilbert’? That doesn’t sound too scary to me). Maria is a succubus and is Mio’s follower and guardian. They aren’t true sisters, but emotionally they are.

They actually try to force Basara from his house, using mind control and other demonic curses, but then we learn HIS truth: he was a member of a hero clan (which explains all the scars they have. Like dad and son went to the tattoo parlor to get matching tats?) and wields great powers. Dad and son eventually speak, Dad advises him on the task set before them all and tells them that they are now all family, or at least more than total strangers.

The show is about not only how these folks have to live together as family, but the struggles to keep opposing forces from trying to kill them all. See, this is why you try not to get hooked up with demons; they are nothing but trouble.

One big problem is this slave-master contract that Mio and Basara have to forge. It was supposed to be that Mio was the master, but Maria makes Basara the master. Here’s where the hijinks come into play. Maria used Succubus magic to form the contract, so the penalty for a disloyal servant is a strong aphrodisiac effect that can only be relieved by the touch of the master, leading to a strong orgasmic release. See that ecchi meter go into the red zone!

As far as the fan service goes, I have to at least put in into “Sekerei” area. We have ‘safety tape’ brought out when things get a bit too revealing and they get revealed a lot (I hope you have noticed that Mio does have a lovely set of lovelies) and Maria, being succubus, is not above teasing and tormenting Basara. Now, later on in the show, things get really wild when Maria releases her true self and we get a big degree of BE, as she goes from eight to eighteen and all that comes with it.

It was very hard to find an uncensored site for all of this and there is no guarantee that the home release will be better, but it does distract from the show when Mio gets gung-ho and has to be fondled to release her from her punishment. Oh, there is a second girl, Yuki Nonaka, who also agrees to all of this nonsense, so now it turns harem as there are three ladies after him (you see quite a lot in the opening credits).

The folks who chase after Mio are relentless and the fighting is near constant, amid the other portions of trying to lead a normal life. Who are you guys fooling? There is nothing you can ever do to lead a ‘normal’ life. It’s just that if fell into standard tropes, in that Basara needs to be stronger, because he lacks something (an iPhone6, Air Jordan sneakers, possibly a Maserati) as he either just holds his own or needs help to defeat his enemies. And what happens when the threat comes from within? How to deal with that? As I said, it just got too pervy heavy, but without some of the charm of other ecchi-type anime. Almost every episode Mio is putting herself out there, thrusting her talents into an uncertain world, exposing much to everyone.

The conclusion smacks heavily of a second season, as we have, honestly, not resolved the issues that swirl about her, so I expect even more hijinks to bedevil us (Hyuk, hyuk. That one was a REAL knee-slapper!)

On a scale of 1 to 10:

Artwork 8 (Naked girls need great artwork)
Plot 7 (Gets creaky in spots)
Pacing 7 (Moves along consistently)
Effectiveness 7 (Flashbacks are helpful)
Conclusion 7 (It reaches a ‘coupler’, but hasn’t ended)
Fan Service 8 (A similar show would be “Sekerei”)

Overall 7 (The perversion got too much to accept)

And remember, it’s first run until you’ve seen it. Do my bidding, slave.
