Now that I know and understand isekai animes (well, kind of understand), I am seeing them everywhere and they take all shapes and sizes and rather bizarre methods to get from where they are to where they are going to be. At least no one had to be murdered for this one (see “Slime”), but that was a reincarnation, not merely a time-and-place transfer. And so we are at the doorstep of another monstrapatiously titled show, “High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World” (“Chōjin-Kokoseitachi wa Isekai demo Yoyu de Ikinuku Yōdesu!”) Yeah, try putting THAT on a t-shirt.
We are introduced to seven of the most incredible, most gifted, most fabulous high school students to ever grace the campus anywhere at any time in human history. They are internationally known for their exceptional abilities and the astounding depth of what they know and how they achieve what they achieve, so when school lets out for the day, you track them down and beat the crap out of them up for being this marvelous while you struggle in geometry class and…sorry, a bit of a tangent. Let us continue.
They are (left to right):
Former ninja and journalist Shinobu Sarutobi.
Skilled and multi-millionaire Masato Sanada
Prime Minister Tsukasa Mikogami (de facto head of the group).
Swordswoman Aoi Ichijo,
Genius inventor Ringo Ohoshi
World-renowned doctor Keine Kanzaki
Magician Prince Akatsuki.
One day, they survive a plane crash only to find themselves in a mediæval fantasy world called Freyjagard. Magically, the pilot is killed in a level of crash that should have destroyed them all, but who wants a four-minute long anime, right? They are rescued by Lyrule and her mother Winona and brought back to health. The seven learn of this mediæval world that they find themselves in, with severe class distinctions and the fact that they are perceived as a threat by the ruling party. They put their seven collective heads together and decide to create a new kingdom, with liberty and justice for all. The series details all the machinations they have to go through to achieve this.
Although a nice and noble idea, they played kind of fast and loose with things. How the hell were they able to make guided missiles? What about the fuel for such a venture? Computer hardware? LCD TV monitors? Cell phone connectivity? Huh? And if that wasn’t bad enough, Lyrule, an elfen maiden, sports an enormous pair of….EARS. Yeah, that’s the ticket. We are also treated to the common trope that the ruling elite are drunk with power and treat those under them as nothing more or better than a boot scrape. Well, those guys will be getting a huge heaping of ‘Take that!”
Overall, it’s not a bad series, but these people are so beyond the pale, you feel like you might as well fling yourself under the street sweeper, as you will never be anything close to them. Yes, the problems they overcome are more than anything you can imagine, as you are rebuilding an entire world, but they are fully up to the challenge on all fronts. It’s a good thing they all like and support one another, as any kind of internal resistance would have made their efforts even more problematic.
But, at the end of the day, it’s an isekai. I am reaching a point where I do not feel I can be objective any more with this genre and I might bypass or overlook a good show, because I am tired of the whole magilla. Still, I would have you watch it, as you may find something appealing and involving that washes over me.
And I would fully binge this, as their struggles are real and they need to be addressed in real time. You will see some degree of glossing over nagging details, but, in the end, you may find it more appealing than what you saw on first blush.
On a scale of 1 to 10:
Artwork 8 (Cute girls, strange villains)
Plot 7 (Typical for an isekai)
Pacing 8 (The heat is on)
Effectiveness 8 (These people have thought out the contingencies)
Conclusion 5 (It reaches a ‘coupler point’, but hasn’t ended)
Fan Service 2 (A similar show would be “Okamisan”)
Overall 8 (Good take on a story involving geniuses)
And remember, it’s first run until you’ve seen it. Care for some mayonnaise?
