The Perfect “Ruby”

January 27th, 2022 in Anime, General Reviews by

Well, things have taken a dramatic turn for the fifth season of “RBWY”.

The band has broken up and each member is going their own way. Things are at a nadir as it appears the whole world is falling apart and it actually is. Yang is severely injured and has to do some real physical therapy to gain back her abilities, her strength, her stamina and her confidence to do battle. And what did you do on your summer break?

Blake has gone home to Menagerie, a land for her kind, where she is free from the yoke of suspicion, only to discover that trouble has followed her and she cannot escape her past, which means she cannot craft her future. Weiss goes to Mistral, (well, more like escapes and flees there) having rejected the confines of her ‘house arrest’ (for want of a better term) as she tries to understand who she really is and what she can really do on her own and for herself. And Ruby?

She joins Team JNPR, which, because of the death of Pyrrha, is renamed RNJR and go in search of Raven, who is Ruby’s mother, and who may have an idea as to where the Spring Maiden is. We are also given the story about the Four Maidens, and we learn it is not myth, but reality. And this is what anchors the world that we all live in.

Meanwhile, Cinder, the group of evil nasties, bent on world domination, is also hunting down the Spring Maiden, to absorb HER power as well. It kind of turns into The Hunt, as if one person can be all four powers at once. As Dumbledore told us in ‘Goblet of Fire’: “I’d like to say a few words. Eternal glory! That’s what awaits…” Thus proceeds the fight.

Now, for the most part, Tales of the Grimm have taken a back seat to something more immediate and more life-altering, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there. With all the chaos and confusion afoot, they have an opportunity to retake vast stretches of land and, perhaps, put the hunters and huntresses to flight. I hope you have a big plate, as it is going to get covered with all that you have to do.

You go get a beer (or the beverage of your choice) and a sandwich or two (or the food of your choice) and plunk yourself in front of the set and go for it!

On a scale of 1 to 10:

Artwork           8 (I have made my peace with it)
Plot                  8 (Forces are starting to build and build)
Pacing              8 (Sometimes things DO come in hot and heavy)
Effectiveness   7 (It sometimes get a bit too improbable)
Conclusion      5 (It reaches a ‘coupler point’, but hasn’t ended)
Fan Service     2 (A similar show would be “Okamisan”)
Bingeability  10 (There’s a whole lotta stuff coming down the pike)

Overall            8 (Good story, getting slowly better as time passes)

And remember, it’s first run until you’ve seen it. What is expected of me?
